General Hive OS FAQ

What is Hive OS?

Hive OS is an operating system based on Ubuntu 2x.04 LTS, designed to provide a user-friendly interface for mining cryptocurrency on CPU/GPU rigs and ASIC miners, with management through a web interface/mobile app.

Is Hive OS free?

It is a conditionally free operating system. If you use up to 2 workers — it is free. Find the details here.

ASICs using Hiveon ASIC Firmware are not charged by our billing system and can use Hive OS for free.

What is a worker?

A worker is a term used to describe both types of mining hardware that is supported by Hive OS: a rig — a computer built with GPUs; and ASIC — an Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) customized for cryptocurrency mining.

What is a watchdog?

Watchdog is a program in Hive OS that monitors various mining conditions to ensure stability. Key types include:

  • Hashrate Watchdog: Restarts the miner if hashrate drops; reboots the rig after 5 minutes if needed.
  • Temperature Watchdog: Stops mining or reboots when critical temperature is reached.
  • Load Average Watchdog: Reboots the rig if the system load is too high.
  • GPU Watchdog: Reboots if a GPU goes offline.
  • Share Time Watchdog: Monitors share submission time, triggering actions if thresholds are breached.
  • ASR Watchdog: Monitors the Accepted Share Ratio after the first share or 15 minutes of activity, based on a 100-share calculation.

Additional controls include power monitoring, with set thresholds for Minimum and Maximum Power (W), and an option to prevent reboots if the internet is lost.

How to unblock an account by IP?

For account blocking issues, please contact the official support email - [email protected].

How to protect Hive OS account from unwanted intruders?

You can protect your account from unauthorized access by enabling two-factor authentication (2FA). Install the Google Authenticator or Authy app on your phone, then go to your account settings and activate 2FA.

To reset the 2FA password, send an email to [email protected]. In the letter, indicate the following information:

  • your login, name and email account in Hive OS
  • the number of workers and their names
  • wallet address from the "Wallets" section (the primary one, if you have several wallets)
  • the last IP address from which the account was logged in and the time of successful login

All fields are required.

If you do not know your external IP address, you can find it out at https://hiveos.farm/myip.

Apart from this, you can revoke unknown sessions or tokens in the "Sessions" section (https://id.hiveon.com/auth/realms/id/account/sessions). Another way to protect your account is by removing any unknown users from the Access tab of your farm.

What is the difference between a regular Hive OS update and a forced one?

With a forced update, the repositories are cleaned, updated, and their installation is repeated. To do this, send the following commands (one by one) to your worker:

apt update

selfupgrade

Hive OS updates don’t automatically update your kernel or drivers to the latest version, but it's easy to do with the following methods:

  1. Flash your drive: Use a tool like Balena Etcher or Rufus to flash the downloaded image.
  2. Live replace the image: Use the hive-replace command to update your image without downtime. For more details, refer to Hive Replace Guide.
