Do I understand correctly that mining is not so effective now because of such a load on the processor?
That’s the most common cause of high load average if you’re not cpu mining. Easy thing to swap out and see if it solves it too. Eventually if the cpu gets bogged down too much it can slow things down yeah, or cause it to lockup.
